How to book a practical driving test
Practical test appointments can be booked online, by phone and by post and subject to you giving us three clear working days notice, can be changed and cancelled online or using our telephone service.
Booking online
To book a test online you will need:
- a valid UK driving licence
- a theory test certificate number
- a valid debit or credit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Visa Electron, Switch/Maestro and Solo cards are accepted)
Booking by phone
To book a practical test with a Call Centre Agent over the phone you will need:
- a valid UK driving licence
- a theory test certificate number
- a valid debit or credit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Visa Electron, Switch/Maestro and Solo cards are accepted)
You can book a practical test over the phone using the numbers below, from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Booking by post
To book a practical test by post you will need an application form. Payment can be made by cheque or postal order, but cash payments are not accepted. Application forms are available online or on request from the Driving Standards Agency booking line.

Special needs and the practical driving test
Rescheduling and cancelling a test
You can reschedule or cancel a practical test either online or by phone up to three clear working days before the test, without loss of fee. The online service is available from 6.00 am to midnight, seven days a week. If you prefer to phone, DSA's Call Centre Agents are available to take your call from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday (except Public Holidays). Dial 0870 0101 372 and follow the prompts.
If you cancel or reschedule the test inside the three working days you will lose your test fee.
Advanced speech recognition (ASR) system
If you already have a practical test booking but would like an earlier date, you can access the Driving Standards Agency's advanced speech recognition (ASR) system by dialling the booking line and following the instructions.
ASR will enable you to change your practical test booking to an earlier date where available, without the need to speak with a call centre agent.
The system is available between 6.30 am and 6.00 am, seven days a week. You must have your theory test pass certificate number and your booking application reference number with you when you call. Dial 0300 2001122 and follow the prompts.
